A Special Feature of Alps Alpine Detector Switches
Double-Sided Sliding Contacts

Alps Alpine directs a lot of attention onto the structure of contacts in its detector switches – double-sided sliding contacts.
Here we introduce sliding contacts along with other ways Alps Alpine realizes detector switches with dust and water resistance.

What Are Sliding Contacts?

Electrical contacts in switches come in a variety of configurations depending on such factors as the use and power capacity.
Alps Alpine detector switches employ sliding (wiping) contacts.
Sliding contacts are structured so contact occurs as the moving contact slides against a fixed contact. As the contact occurs, any tiny particles of foreign matter or film that come between the contacts are removed (self-cleaning), ensuring high contact reliability in use with very small currents.
Sliding contacts with a moving contact that clamps the fixed contact from both sides are called double-sided sliding contacts and are even more reliable.

Besides sliding contacts, there are also contact structures where the contacts collide with each other, like butt contacts, but these are primarily used, for example, in power switches with medium to high currents when electricity would break through surface film.

The Reliability of Double-Sided Sliding Contacts

・Advantages in combating particulates/foreign matter or gas
・Stable performance when subject to impacts

Alps Alpine's Dustproof and Waterproof Detector Switches

Needless to say, the first task, before thinking about double-sided sliding switches, is to take steps to prevent foreign matter infiltrating the switch.
Alps Alpine supplies a variety of detector switches with dustproof and waterproof designs.
