HAPTIC Reactor Hybrid Tough Type

The HAPTIC Reactor is a vibrational feedback device. While it vibrates according to the same principles as a linear resonant actuator (LRA), the HAPTIC Reactor Hybrid Tough Type, already in mass production, generates resonant vibrations in two directions, doubling to tripling the frequency range where sensations can be achieved compared to an ordinary LRA. Incorporated into game consoles and VR controllers, it realistically recreates diverse types of feel, helping to enhance the immersive and realistic nature of the experience and enabling generation of the most suitable vibrational feedback for each scenario.

Basic Operating Principles of the HAPTIC Reactor Hybrid Tough Type

The HAPTIC Reactor Hybrid Tough Type has the same basic structure as an LRA, generating force through the interaction of a stator and an oscillator. Inside the product are magnets and a coil, as an oscillator, with its ends opposite the magnets. The oscillator is supported by springs. (Fig. 1)

When current passes through the coil, force is generated from the direction of magnetization occurring in the coil and the direction of the magnet's field, moving the oscillator to induce vibration. (Fig. 2)

If the current through the coil is interrupted during vibration, the oscillator vibrates freely from the reaction force of the springs alone. (Fig. 3)

By adjusting the current through the coil according to the resonant frequency of the oscillator and springs, it is possible to amplify minimal force into vibrational movement and achieve a strong vibration force.

Comparison with an ERM Motor

Comparison with an ERM Motor

Eccentric rotating mass (ERM) motors are the most common form of vibrating electromagnetic feedback device. They are mainly used for vibrational feedback in mobile phones to notify the user of an incoming call or message.
An ERM motor generates vibrations by rotating the off-center weight attached to the motor shaft. While it is possible to increase the vibration force with a heavier attached mass or a faster rotation speed, it is not possible to control the vibration force and vibration frequency (motor speed) independently.

ERM motors and other rotating motors can convert rotation into linear movement using mechanical parts, such as gears. The HAPTIC Reactor and other LRAs generate linear movement directly, enabling direct drive.
Because LRA oscillators are supported by a spring, they touch no other parts and are therefore not dependent on transmission of force by friction, for example. This structure allows a quick response and sharper sensations than with rotating motors.

Hybrid Tough Type

Applying the above basic operating principles, Alps Alpine has developed the HAPTIC Reactor Hybrid Tough Type possessing two resonance points for vibration horizontally, at a 160Hz vibration frequency, and vertically, at 320Hz.
The Hybrid Tough Type is designed to produce resonant vibrations in two directions with M-shaped springs supporting the oscillator.
Because horizontal and vertical spring vibrations are independent of one another, it is possible to combine the two. This allows use of complex input signals and realistic expression of diverse sensations.
